Poet laureate donates book to local society.

SHENANDOAH -- The Greater Shenandoah Area Historical Society has received an autographed copy of ``Shenandoah Long Ago,'' written by Virginia's Poet Laureate Joseph F. Awad as a tribute to his hometown. The hardback copy arrived May 27 as a gift to Awad's hometown.

In his dedication, he wrote, ``For the Greater Shenandoah Area Historical Society, with loving memories of my boyhood in that wonderful town and all those wonderful people.'' The book and a copy of Virginia Gov. James F. Gilmore's announcement of Awad's appointment as poet laureate were presented to the the society at Tuesday's meeting at borough hall by President Valerie E. Macdonald. ``He is one of our distinguished natives and this work makes an excellent addition to our archives,'' she said. ``The poems are really beautiful as well. I have my own copy.'' Macdonald said she sent an e-mail to Awad asking if she could get a copy of the book for the society's archives.
