However the results of all the searching have proven to be very interesting, and they raise many questions of their own. Index of 1890 NY Immigrants from Austria, Poland, and Galicia New York's famous Ellis Island did not begin to receive immigrants until 1892. The period of immigration before this is very hard to track, record keeping was often incomplete, and sometimes non-existant. Immigrant surnames were often spelled as immigration workers heard them. Occasionally, surnames were "Americanized", or changed by these well-meaning workers. The Ellis Island archives, located at www.ellisisland.org, include records for the surnames; Popalis, Pupelis, Papelis, Pepelis, Papalis, Papolis, Popalas, Popeless, and Pupeles - just to name a few. The difficulty of tracking Popalis ancestors is amplified by incomplete or incorrect information. Darius Pupelis from Lithuania reports that Ellis Island records are anything but accurate. One such record found on this page lists Roka Lisk as a place of residence, Darius reports that this place does not exist, it is more likely Rokishkis.
